Reading 'Broken Soup'

Hi friends,

I promised myself and you that this post would be about my school teachers. My apologies.This post would be about a novel I read yesterday.I went to book fair on Tamukkam ground last Saturday.It was nice to see a reasonably large crowd.

I bought a novel called 'Broken Soup' by Jenny Valentine.I had no idea what I had in store for.

The narrator is Rowan Clarke,a 15 year old girl. The story takes place in London.Two years back, Rowan was a typical teenage girl who had a normal family with her elder brother Jake and younger sister Stroma and parents who were happy with each other.

It all fell apart when Jake had died by drowing in a lake in France where he went for one month vacation.Rowan's dad moved out of their home after a fight with his wife. Her mom sank into depression that consisted of not talking to anybody else in home and walking like  zombie.

Rowan starts to look after both her mom and her six year old sister Stroma.
Rowan lies to her dad about mom's condition and he is blissfully unaware of the fact that his 15 year old daughter is taking care of the family alone.

Rowan meets a 18 year old American boy Harper who gives her a negative photo claiming she has dropped it.Bee, a school mate of Rowan takes interest in the negative and when they both develop it,it ends up showing the smiling face of Jake.

Rowan is confused about the coincidence.She is pretty sure she doesn't own it.Rowan starts spending time with both Harper who he starts fancying and Bee who becomes her best friend. Then Rowan finds a sea post card from Jake to Bee just 2 days before his death!!! Bee was Jake's girlfriend??What is the mystery of Bee's brother Sonny??

Okay,story time over. You have to read the story for the twists after that.(Or wikipedia it)

I happened to travel some four hours yesterday and I finished the novel.I actually abandoned it twice in midway because the angst was too much for me to bear.

The tragedy of losing a sibling and the depression and his memories was written in too much detail that you would start feeling the hollowness too.

I finished it because I wanted to know weather Rowan was okay in the end.The only thing I cant believe that she would lie to her father about her mom's condition for 2 years!!!

Rowan was mature and responsible for her age and I rooted for her till the end and poor Bee!!!

One of my sad reads but sometimes they are good too, like a sad melody!!!

On Harry Potter

       There are things we enjoy,that made great impact on ourselves that we simply can't imagine our life without it..My friends may roll their eyes at me for this dramatic statement..I hardly blame them, because they had to endure with my obsession during our school days.(infact I inflicted my obsession on quite a number of people!!!)

      If its still not clear from the title, I'm talking about my beloved Harry Potter series by J.K.Rowling...that is I'm not a fan of Harry potter movies,only books.(unlike some of my friends)..

             I watched first two movies to get my imagination of characters and wizarding world right..I spent the last of my teenage years immersing in the wonderful Hogwarts..
Though in the later years I understood,magic didn't solve anything but created many problems along the way..but where is fun,with out trouble??(for us to read anyway).

             When I got tired of reading the books again and again(I know,I read that many times),I discovered the wonderful world of fan fiction:-) 

               Though you have to swim across thousands of garbage to read one decent story, its worth our time..I got addicted to fan fiction for some time and started seeing the characters in grey shades than my previous version of black and white.. When my favorite characters are shown to be imperfect,I accepted it and admired them for their flaws..after all I don't want to read about Heroes but normal human beings who are pushed to such extremes..

              Quiet a rant..isn't it???

                 

கல்கியின் பொன்னியின் செல்வன்

பொதுவாக தமிழ் நாவல்கள் என்றால் நம் நினைவுக்கு வருவது பாக்கெட் நாவல் மற்றும் குடும்ப கதைகள் என்று ராணி முத்து பிரசுரிக்கும் கதைகளே,என்னுடைய ஆசிரியர் ஒருவர் அக்கதைகளை 'கன்னத்தில் முத்தம் கத்தியில் ரத்தம்' வகையிலான கதைகள் என்று கிண்டல் செய்வார்.
               தரமான தமிழ் எழுத்து என்று என் மனதில் இடம் பிடித்தது திரு.கல்கி அவர்களின் 'பொன்னியின் செல்வன்'.அந்த கதை என் மனதில் ஏற்படுத்திய தாக்கம் பெரிது.எந்த அளவு என்றால்; மதுரையில்,பாண்டிய மண்ணில் பிறந்த நான் கதை முடியும் தருவாயில் பாண்டிய மன்னர்களை வெறுத்திருந்தேன்.(பொன்னியின் செல்வன் கதையில் சோழர்களை கதாநாயகர்களாகவும் பாண்டியர்களை வில்லன்கள் போலவும் சித்தரித்திருப்பார்கள்.)
                 ஆரம்பத்தில்,கதையில் வரும் பெயர்களை ஞாபகம் வைத்து கொள்வதே பெரிய தலைவலியாக இருந்தது.எளிமையான பெயர்கள் என்றாலும் வித்தியாசமான பெயர்கள்.வந்தியத்தேவன்,குந்தவை,ஆதித்த கரிகாலன்.வானதி,சுந்தரச்சோழர்,அநிருத்தர் ஆகிய பெயர்கள் வித்தியாசம் தானே!எப்படியோ பின்பு பழகி கொண்டேன்.கதையை படித்து முடித்த பிறகு,கொஞ்ச நாளைக்கு பல்லக்கு,உப்பரிகை,அந்தபுரம்,அரண்மனை,இராஜதந்திரம்,பாதாள சிறைச்சாலை,சுரங்க வழி,இராஜ்யம் என்று ராஜா காலத்து மொழி நம் உரையாடலில் இடம் பெறுவது நிச்சயம்.
              வந்தியத்தேவன் ஒவ்வொரு முறையும் ஏதாவது சுரங்க வழியையோ பாதாள சிறையையோ கடக்கும் போது நம்முடைய இதயத்துடிப்பு எகிறி இருக்கும்.நந்தினி அழகிய வில்லியாக வரும் இவர் கடைசி வரைக்கும் பாண்டிய மன்னனின் காதலியா மகளா என சொல்லாமலே விட்டிருப்பது விந்தை.கடைசி வரை ஆதித்த கரிகாலனை கொன்றது யார் என்றும் சொல்லவில்லை.
              கதையில் குந்தவை மிக பெரிய அறிவாளியாக சித்தரிக்கப்படுகிறாள்.ஆனால் நந்தினியின் சூழ்ச்சிகளை அவரால் முறியடிக்க முடியவில்லை என்பதே உண்மை.அருள் மொழி தேவர்(பிற்கால இராஜ ராஜ சோழன்) இவர் தான் கதையில்   பொன்னியின் செல்வர்.காவிரி தாய் இவரை ஐந்து வயதாகி இருக்கும் போது இவர் உயிரை காப்பாற்றியதால் இந்த பெயர்.கதை முழுக்க பயங்கர பாப்புலாரிட்டியோடு வலம் வருகிறார் ராகுல் காந்தி போல.ஆனால் அப்படி என்ன தான் நல்ல விஷயம் செய்தார் என்று தெரிய வில்லை.(அதாவது அரியணை ஏறுவதற்கு முன்.)
                நந்தினியின் தாயாக வரும் ஊமை பெண்மணி கடைசி வரை பாண்டிய மன்னனின் மனைவியா,சுந்தர சோழரின் மனைவியா என்று கல்கி முதற்கொண்டு யாருக்கும் தெரியவில்லை.மாயமாக அவ்வப்போது எல்லாரையும் காப்பாற்றுகிறார்.கடைசியில் சுந்தர சோழருக்கு ஊடே விழுந்து உயிர் விடுகிறார்.
                 முதன் மந்திரியாக வரும் அநிருத்தரும் அவருடைய ஒற்றனாக வரும் ஆழ்வார்கடியானும் வரும் இடங்களில் சமயோசித அறிவும்,இராஜ தந்திரங்களும் பளிச்சிடுங்கின்றன.மேலும் சைவ வைணவ பிரச்சனையில் நடக்கும் விவாதங்களின்(ஆழ்வார்கடியானுக்கும் பிற சைவர்களுக்கும்) தீப்பொறி பறக்கிறது.
                   தமிழ் சினிமாவில் வருவது போல் பிறப்பு இரகசியம்,பிறந்தவுடன் இடம் மாறி விடும் குழந்தைகள் ஆகியவையும் உண்டு.கடைசி வரை ஒவ்வொருவரும் ஒவ்வொரு விஷயத்தை இரகசியம் என்று காப்பாற்றுகிறார்கள்.ஒருதலை காதல்கள்,பழிக்கு பழியும் உண்டு.பூங்குழலி,சேந்தன் அமுதன்,வானதியும் கதையில் முக்கிய பங்காற்றுகின்றனர்.கதை இலங்கை வரை செல்கிறது.மழை,புயல்,வெயில்,இருட்டு,கப்பல் கவிழ்வது,காற்று என அனைத்து சீசன்களும் அருமையாக விவரிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.
                    கல்கியின் அருமையான தமிழ் வர்ணனைகள் தஞ்சையின் வீதிகள்,அரண்மனைகள்,காடுகள்,நடுக்கடல் என அனைத்தையும் நம் கண் முன்னே கொண்டு வந்து நிறுத்துகிறது.
                     இவ்வளவு பெரிய கதையின் கால அளவு(duration) ஒரு வருடத்திற்கும் குறைவே.அதற்குள் எவ்வளவு நிகழ்வுகள்!???(events).பல்லவன் பார்த்திபனின் பொறாமை,கந்தமாறனின் சிநேகத்துரோகம்,மணிமேகலை,வானதி,சேந்தன் அமுதனின் உண்மையான காதல்,ஆதித்த கரிகாலனின் மனக்குழப்பங்கள்,நந்தினியின் சூழ்ச்சிகள்.பெரிய பழுவேட்டரையரின் மோகம்,மதுராந்தகரின் பேராசை,அநிருத்தரின் புத்திக்கூர்மை,ஆழ்வார்கடியானின் தந்திரம்,வந்திய தேவனின் நேர்மை,வீரம்,குந்தவையின் செல்வாக்கு,அருள் மொழி தேவரின்(பொன்னியின் செல்வன்) நற்குணங்கள் என கதையை கதை மாந்தர்களின் பிரதான பண்பு நலன்களே வழி நடத்துகின்றன.
                   அக்காலத்திலயே ஒரு இராஜ்யத்தை கைப்பற்ற நடக்கும் சதி திட்டங்களும் சூழ்ச்சிகளும் நம்மை வியக்க வைக்கின்றன.
                      இக்கதையை பதித்து முடித்த எவருக்குமே இது கண்டிப்பாக favourite ஆக இருக்கும்.இக்கதை வாராவாரம் முதலில் தொடர் கதையாக பிரசுரிக்க பெற்று பிறகு புத்தக வடிவம் பெற்றதால் ஒவ்வொரு அத்தியாயமும் ஒரு டிவிச்ட்டோடவே முடிகிறது.
